A beautiful country house by the city

This is a beautiful single storey period house on the banks of the River Shannon. It has strong links to the O'Brien chieftains, built by the son of the Young Ireland Leader, William Smith O'Brien, a direct descendant of Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland and passed on down through his direct family since.

Apart from the significant history associated with this house, it is a unique architectural gem, built by the eccentric Donough O'Brien and has inspired famous artists from the O'Brien family, such as Dermot O'Brien whose art dominates the National Gallery, Cicely O'Brien and Geraldine O'Brien who painted from her studio in the house.
The house and gardens were neglected for a while and work is underway to restore the estate to its former splendour.

Immersed in culture

This property played host to generations of Irish artists from both the O'Brien family and other reknowned artists.

The stunning gardens, serene river setting, ancient constructions, gothic church and tranquility have attracted and inspired artists for many centuries. The house has hosted many domestic and international artists and runs art courses during the summer months.

Stepped in History

In addition to the artistic heritage of the house, the property is owned by a family directly descended from Brian Boru and Young Ireland rebel, William Smith O'Brien.

The property is surrounded by the remains of many ancient irish settlements. It has been used as a base to repel Viking raiders, English armies and more recently (thanks to the proximity of Thomond Park stadium) Leinster, Connaught, Ulster and New Zealand's rugby fans.
